Body fat testing is a great way to help you evaluate your child’s fitness status. We know that fatter children have a stronger tendency to be obese as adults, and to have a greater risk of heart disease. These children could also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol, also leading to the development of cardiovascular disease. In addition, diabetes becomes a great risk to a child with too much body fat.

We recommend that children be taught about the benefits of physical exercise and nutrition and how these can aid in the achievement and maintenance of healthy body fat %. Changes in body fat as well as shape, especially in girls, occur during puberty. This is normal and should be conveyed to your aging child.

Children should first be made aware of the purpose and methods of the measuring body fat. You should maintain records over time of the body fat % results, but also track their growth, diet, and physical activity. Keep the results private between you and your child. Ensure that these measurements are as private as visiting the family doctor. Do not be negative, or label, criticize, or berate. Self-esteem and self-image is very important to your child. There should be no negative effects by performing these tests, as long as you take the time to educate your child. Your relationship and motivation is very important if your child needs to improve personal body fat results.

Make the entire experience positive and your whole family will be motivated toward a fitness oriented lifestyle
